The Spirits
Rye Vodka + Black Russian Coffee Liqueur + fresh cream — start with a Black Russian, add cream. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
What You'll Need — serves 1
- —50 ml Rye Vodka
- —25 ml Black Russian Coffee Liqueur
- —40 ml fresh cream — lightly whipped (not stiff, just slightly thickened)
- —Ice — large cubes
- —Ground coffee or fresh nutmeg (garnish)
Glass: Rocks glass over large ice cubes Garnish: Dusting of ground coffee or freshly grated nutmeg
Instructions
- 1Build a Black Russian first: large ice in a rocks glass, vodka, then pour the coffee liqueur over the back of a spoon.
- 2Lightly whip the cream until it just starts to thicken — it should still pour but with some body.
- 3Pour the cream slowly over the back of a bar spoon in a steady stream. Let it float on the surface — don''t let it sink.
- 4Dust with a pinch of ground coffee or freshly grated nutmeg.
- 5Drink through the cream layer. That''s the whole point.
The Story
The White Russian is often dismissed as a dessert drink or a party starter. Done properly with quality ingredients, it''s neither — it''s a serious after-dinner cocktail that happens to be delicious. The cream layer on top is not decoration; it''s the first thing you taste and it tempers the coffee intensity on entry.
The Dude drank it in a bowling alley. You can do better.
> Do not use UHT cream. Fresh cream from a dairy only, slightly whipped.
