Black Russian

The Spirits

Rye Vodka + Black Russian Coffee Liqueur β€” both made in our shed in Wooragee. Two ingredients, both from the same address.

What You'll Need β€” serves 1

  • 50 ml Rye Vodka
  • 25 ml Black Russian Coffee Liqueur
  • Large ice cubes β€” the bigger, the better
  • Coffee beans (optional garnish)

Glass: Rocks glass, large ice

Garnish: Coffee beans

Instructions

  1. Fill a rocks glass with large ice cubes.
  2. Pour the vodka directly over the ice.
  3. Pour the coffee liqueur slowly over the back of a bar spoon so it layers gently on top.
  4. Resist the urge to stir for the first sip. Watch the two layers slowly begin to meet. Stir after that.

The Story

The Black Russian was invented in Brussels in 1949, named for its dark colour and the Russian spirit at its core. Our version uses both vodka and coffee liqueur from the same shed β€” a small geographical update to the story. The Black Russian Coffee Liqueur is made with locally sourced coffee, which gives it a cleaner, less syrupy character than commercial alternatives.

Two ingredients. No complexity. Sometimes that''s the point.

> The slow pour-over-spoon creates a two-tone effect that looks as good as it tastes.
